Vaccines are indispensable resources for individual and public health. Immunization can prevent infections and hinder the spread of various illnesses throughout a region. When acting upon an organism, they stimulate it to produce its own protection (for example, antibody production) against illnesses. It is the most effective way to control and even eradicate illnesses.

Instituto Butantan is responsible for the production of important vaccines: diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis (DTP) vaccine adsorbed, diphtheria and adult tetanus (dT) vaccine adsorbed, diphtheria and infantile tetanus (DT) vaccine adsorbed, hepatitis B (recombinant) vaccine adsorbed, seasonal influenza vaccine trivalent (broken up and inactivated) and inactivated rabies vaccine (VR/VERO).

New vaccines have been included in the national vaccination schedule thanks to technology transfer agreements between private partners, the Ministry of Health and Instituto Butantan:

• HPV, in partnership with MSD - for girls ages 11-13
• Hepatitis A, in partnership with MSD - for infants 12 months or younger
• Tdap, in partnership with GSK (GlaxoSmithKline) - for pregnant women
