The heterologous hyperimmune sera are medicines that contain antibodies produced by immunized animals, used for the treatment of poisonings caused by animal venoms, toxins or viral infections.

Over the course of more than 100 years, Instituto Butantan has been taking care of society's demands for poisonings by venomous animals through the production of specific sera that are distributed around the entire country.

Instituto Butantan produces 13 types of sera with a production system that has become a domestic and international point of reference. For a quality product, the entire process is carried out in a closed, semi-automated system with the capacity of producing up to a million ampoules of serum per year.

The production process starts with the immunization of horses with specific antigens prepared with poisons of snakes, spiders, scorpions and lizards for production of hyperimmune sera, bacterial toxins and anatoxins for the production of the antitoxic sera or even inactivated rabies virus for the production of specific antiviral serum. For such activity, Butantan keeps about 800 horses distributed among several sites, including the São Joaquim Farm, which belongs to the institute, and other care providers. The animals undergo rigorous medical-veterinarian monitoring to guarantee the welfare of the animals and the highest quality of their intermediate and final products. For the sera production, plasma obtained by bleeding the horses undergoes a sequence of physical and chemical processes for immunoglobulin purification, and is rigorously tested for quality in several production phases, standards that must be met in order to release each lot of product made. Instituto Butantan's horse-derived hyperimmune sera production process is the only one in the world to have been experimentally validated as a safe process for the elimination of several types of viruses during the plasma separation, resulting in a final product that is virus-free.
