Since 1901, Instituto Butantan has been producing immunobiologicals for public health purposes and is responsible for the majority of vaccines and sera produced in Brazil. Its products are part of the National Immunization Program (Programa Nacional de Imunizações, PNI), are sent to the Ministry of Health, which in turn distributes them strategically and free of charge throughout the population.

With a spacious production complex, research centers and the São Joaquim Farm (located in the city of Araçariguama, where the breeding of horses for the production of antibodies used for sera takes place), Instituto Butantan has been investing in the improvement of development and production processes for immunobiologicals. This strategy aims at guaranteeing access to and supply and quality standards of vaccines and sera, with the main objective of gaining approvals from national and international health regulatory agencies by following concepts and parameters that comply with recommendations outlined in the Good Manufacturing Practices (Boas Práticas de Fabricação, BPF) and Good Laboratory Practices ( Boas Práticas de Laboratório, BPL).
