Objetivo Geral da Unidade e Linhas de Pesquisas Atuais:

As pesquisas desenvolvidas neste Laboratório têm três enfoques principais: a Farmacologia de Toxinas e Venenos Animais e a Farmacologia Comparada e a Farmacologia Endócrina. Os efeitos e mecanismos de ação de toxinas isoladas e de venenos de serpentes, escorpiões e aranhas são estudados nos sistemas cardiovascular, endócrino e nervoso central e autônomo, canais iônicos além dos efeitos e mecanismos pró e anti-inflamatórios. A Farmacologia Comparada e Endócrina ocupa-se da caracterização molecular e funcional de receptores, peptídeos e hormônios de serpentes e mamíferos e da secreção de venenos de serpentes.
Os estudos sobre toxinas e venenos favorecem a identificação de ferramentas úteis para o estudo de diversos mecanismos fisiológicos ou farmacológicos bem como o desenho de novos agentes terapêuticos. Ainda, o melhor entendimento dos efeitos dos venenos e suas toxinas permite o desenvolvimento de novas estratégicas terapêuticas mais eficazes para os casos de envenenamento. Por outro lado, o estudo comparativo permite revelar biomoléculas e sistemas peculiares do ponto de vista estrutural e funcional além de análises onto e filogenéticas e a produção de toxinas in vitro.
