The Documentation Center at Instituto Butantan was created in 2010 with the goal of preserving and to disseminating the institution's scientific memory, besides supporting activities in the areas of Museology and History of Science. The development of methodological research in the area of collections administration is also part of its mission.

Managing collections derived from Instituto Butantan's research, production and cultural areas, the Documentation Center functions in the realm of preventive conservation, management, treatment and control of documents produced and/or used at the institution, from their creation to their use and transaction, till their final destiny (permanent archive or disposal), taking care of the preservation and careful safeguarding of this memory.

Instituto Butantan's collection is made up of texts, images, three-dimensional objects, audio and audiovisual recordings totaling approximately 280 linear meters of textual documents, about 16,900 images (maps, plans, photographs, posters, slides, amongst others), around 1,500 three-dimensional objects and more than 50 audio recordings in addition to the 72 audiovisual recordings held at the Cinemateca Brasileira.

The textual documents are of different types and they reveal the various functions of the institution’s administrative and scientific functions.
