The Historical Museum's objective is research, preservation and diffusion of the history of science, health, and, especially, Instituto Butantan. Together with the Biological Museum and the Microbiology Museum, the Historical Museum is committed to the social responsibility of expanding access to the institution's collections, fostering and strengthening relationships with visitors along with a continual renewal and critical training process.

Created in 1981, the museum is housed in the same stable that had been adapted for Vital Brazil's laboratory, where the first ampules of anti-plague serum were developed and delivered to sanitation authorities.

The exhibition space is about 280 m² large and displays part of the building's original floor and wall as well as objects from Instituto Butantan's research and production laboratories.

The Historical Museum also holds temporary exhibits in partnership with the laboratories at Instituto Butantan and other institutions on subjects related to the history of science and health.

The educational activities related to the long-term exhibit take place on a daily basis.

Hours of operation: Tuesday-Sunday, 9:00 a.m.-4:45 p.m.
